Session Cookies and Persistent Cookies

Cookies that expire at the end of a browser session (normally when a user exits their browser) are called session cookies. Cookies that can be stored for longer are called persistent cookies.

Session cookies allow websites to recognise and link the actions of a user during a browsing session. They may be used for a variety of purposes such as remembering user transactions and requests whilst the user browses around a site.

Persistent cookies are stored on a user’s device.  They can allow the preferences or actions of the user across a site (or across different websites) to be remembered.

Persistent cookies may be used for a variety of purposes including remembering users’ preferences and choices when using a site or to target advertising. The length of time between a cookie being set and expiry is set by the website operator, either first party or third party (please see below).  A user can also delete previously set persistent cookies manually or configure the browser settings to delete cookies at a set interval.

What are ‘first-party’ and ‘third-party’ cookies?

Whether a cookie is ‘first’ or ‘third’ party refers to the website or domain placing the cookie.  First-party cookies are set directly by the website the user is visiting. In the case of Alter Domus, the website that places the cookie is www.alterdomus.com.

Third-party cookies are set by a domain other than the one the user is visiting. This typically occurs when the website incorporates elements from other sites, such as images, social media plugins or advertising. When the browser or other software fetches these elements from the other sites, these cookies may also be set.

Cookies used in the Alter Domus website

This cookie notice informs you about the cookies (and similar technologies such as pixels) which Alter Domus, as a controller, places on your computer when you visit our website.  Alter Domus use various types of cookies: essential cookies and statistical cookies, and also allow the use of third party marketing cookies.

Essential cookies are essential for enabling user movement around our website and providing access to certain features such as the ‘Contact Us’ functionality. These cookies do not gather information about you that could be used for marketing purposes and do not remember where you have been on the internet. This category of cookies cannot be disabled. You can set your browser to block or alert you about these cookies, but subsequently some parts of the site will not work.

Statistical cookies define new visitors, help analyse website usage data, and track historical activity on the website, such as response to particular campaigns or the length of the sales cycle.  They are used to collect information and report website usage statistics without personally identifying individual visitors.

Marketing cookies are used to target advertising to a user. They are often served by third party companies, and track a user across websites.

For more information about the type of cookies, the specific functions they perform, the parties that place these cookies and process the data we provide them and the timespan of the cookies embedded in your device, please review the table below.
