Showing Strength in Adversity

"There were various challenges that managers had to react to quickly, and the vast majority were able to adapt and respond," says Spencer Wells, Regional Director at Alter Domus, as he spoke to Private Debt Investor. A hardened UK private debt industry has emerged out of 2020, as managers weathered the pandemic's unprecedented challenges through versatility and are now focusing on a brighter year.

According to Spencer, the pandemic has been a make or break test for many managers. Those that were able to react and adapt to challenges in the market quickly were the ones that prevailed. He outlined the maintenance of diversified portfolios, strong investor relations, and efficient operational procedures as key characteristics that provided managers this required agility.

Looking toward the future, Spencer said "Covid has caused devastation to many individual businesses and specific industries but the debt industry has reacted well. Going forward, the managers that emerge stronger will now be able to embrace new opportunities to offer flexible debt solutions."
